During high school, I was heavily involved with Theater. I took the classes, performed in the shows and built the sets. My senior year, I even took a class at a local theater designed to teach us the ins and outs of producing a show.
During one of our assignments, we ran production for the state Thespian Society conference. During an off shift, I climbed up a hidden spiral staircase on the stage to watch the play unfolding below. It was fascinating as I watched those backstage scurry about.
Stage Managers directing the actors. Costumer designers assisting with changes from scene to scene. Stage hands moving props. Lighting technicians moving flawlessly from blackout to blackout.
For every actor onstage, there were a host of others that the audience never knew were there, pulling the show together.
As God began to deal with me about affecting the scope of Student Ministry throughout our ranks, I could think of no better explanation for what it is that we do.
So much of Student Ministry is behind the scenes. So much of what we do is out from behind the pulpit and is in the daily details of our students. They don’t see the countless hours prayed, they don’t see the administration that goes into a youth department. They don’t see the highs and lows, the ebbs and flows.
This blog is about those moments. And more specifically, how to thrive in those moments that nobody ever sees. How to fight through the frustration, how to cast the vision, how to lead better, how to impact your students more effectively.
How to thrive behind the scenes of your Student Ministry to reach your students.
The Backstage was birthed with a passion to help you excel in those areas that your students may never see. With a passion to see you reach your city more effectively. To change your world.
I will openly admit to not knowing all there is to know about Student Ministry. I am well acquainted with my short-comings and lack of knowledge in many areas. I don’t have all the answers and I won’t pretend that I do.
My promise to you is that if you come along for the ride, I will be as raw, real and transparent as I can possibly be. I’ll do everything I can to help you become the leader that I know you can be. I’ll do everything in my power to assist you in reaching your students.
I’m looking forward to this journey with you…
